Our week was a BLAST! We began on Monday learning about a hero named Martin Luther King Jr. He was brave and kind and made a change in countless peoples' lives with his patience and persistence. When we spent our second Play Day with our friends we practiced kindness and sharing and respect, I think we have a wonderful start! We made Hh hats with our creative imaginations. We are really working on remembering our sight words and stretching sounds together to make words!! To close out our food unit we had visitors who had been in Japan come and share their experiences and make Fried Rice for us to try! We even were able to use chopsticks!! Did you know that kids in Japan take turns cleaning the schools? We learned to be really thankful for the people who help us keep our classroom and school clean:)

Science/Social Studies Theme: Transportation Week 1
Math: Comparing Numbers
Even with all of our extra fun and practice for the show, we have learned the letter Ii and read books about transportation, learned about numbers and how they can go together to make bigger and smaller numbers and talked about kindness. We are dreaming about what we want to be when we grow up and talking about how much we need to try and work and help each other to make our dream come true. It takes a long time to work on our dreams, it doesn't happen overnight and we are ready to work and practice and re-do until we see each of us master our plans.

Getting to know our school routines
One full week and we are tired and happy! So much to remember, so different than home, (good and a little questionable:). We are making new friends and feeling included and sometimes left out, hmmm what to do, Oh We Know, go ask a friend to play, invite a friend to read a book, ask if you can have a turn! Who knew we could come up with so many ways to help ourselves and our friends learn and be happy. Look through our live actions shots to find pictures of friends helping and sharing and learning:)

Evaluation Week
Review
We went to the ZOOOOOO!!!!! Everything about the day was amazing. The bus ride, the animals, the park. We learned about the habitats of local animals, their fur, their food, their sounds. Seeing and smelling and being near the animals makes the learning so much more real for us and we can access our knowledge and catalog it to things we already know with greater success!

We are winding down our Kindergarten year:( . We have made so many wonderful memories and learned SOOOO much! Let's finish strong with the last few letters and words. Continue to make deeper connections with our math skills and don't forget to be a friend even when we are tired from the longer days. We are talking about text importance and comparing and contrasting different kinds of fish. We are learning that some books have the same characters but sometimes those characters learn and do different things in the plot of the book. Watch for info on our visit to the Pine Grove Zoo to wrap up our unit on Amazing Animals.

This has been a special week for so many reasons. First, our para Mrs. Reich became a US citizen! She took her oath in Duluth and then we had a special parade for her here at school and made her a special book and flag to honor her hard work! It takes years and money and tons of paperwork and learning to become a citizen, thank you for your dedication Mrs. Reich! Welcome to America! Next, WE ALL MASTERED OUR BASEBALL SIGHT WORDS! That is such a wonderful milestone as we learn to read that we decided to have a baseball themed celebration! We had hotdogs and popcorn, relay races with baseballs and baseball gear, danced to baseball music and Mr. Peterson presented each of us with a personal certificate stating our mastery! We all said thank you, looked Mr. Peterson in the eye and shook his hand. We are polite and respectful! We also were able to SMASH a baseball pinata and wow was that a blast! Our learning target in math this week is estimating and checking our guess. We guessed 70-90 pieces of candy and there were......141:) . We are pumped to finish Kindergarten STRONG and be more than ready for FIRST GRADE!

We are masters at predicting what will come next in our stories and after almost a full year of kindergarten the formation of Ww and Ll isn't even a challenge:) . We did get a bit stumped with the sight words so practice, practice, practice little kinders! Also, counting backwards form 20, whoooooeeeee now that is a skill to be reckoned with!

We wrote about our favorite community helpers and what we might want to be when we grow up:) . We are subtracting like crazy and counting backwards all over the place. We are reading each and everyday no matter what our silly level tells us we are at and we feel good about ourselves doing it! We sing and dance and play and take turns and try a little bit of the snacks at Nutrition Break time because our taste buds regenerate about every 20 days, so, you never know when a new taste bud that actually likes broccoli will pop up:) . We talk about real and nonsense words and how to use our strategies to work on a word we don't know. We play hard and rest harder. Also, we are getting sick, so please be sure we get enough rest and keep us home if we have a fever, just sayin:) . WE LOVE KINDERGARTEN and our teacher loves us.

Razzle Dazzle Readers for a prize and now we have our new month to read and mark our new Razzle Dazzle Readers. Please try to read with us, it really does help us to get to be better and better readers the more practice we can get. We had a visit from dental school candidates and they helped us practice how to keep out teeth clean. (But we already knew how:) We had our first Pep Fest to send off our town's champion wrestlers, and our Kindergarten members of the Cheer Squad did a fantastic job cheering for the whole school!!! We worked on changing a letter to make a new word and word families. We started SUBTRACTION! and we are still continuing to work on counting back from twenty and those big numbers past 20. Conferences will be at the end of this month! Please try to attend as you are able.

We are getting so creative with our writing! This week we wrote about our crazy "H" hats. Buster made a heart shaped house and said it was a beepy house.....his way of talking about the heartbeat! Way to think and write about your thoughts Buster!! We also built some wonderful imaginary houses as we were thinking about the letter Hh. We read a fun story by author Jan Brett that had Hedgie the Hedgehog and his animal friends wearing some zany hats as well. To wrap up our unit on healthy foods and enhance the story Yoko, which is about a little girl from Japan who brings sushi to school for a treat, we had visitors to our classroom that had lived and visited Japan. They showed us a school lunch box from Japan (it has little compartments for the different foods!) . and they told us that the students CLEAN the entire schools in Japan, no custodians. So we are now even more thankful for our custodians and are working on being better at doing our part to keep our school as clean and tidy as we can:) . Lastly during our Japan day we actually watched fried rice being made in our classroom and then we all were able to TRY it! best of all most of us really, really liked the taste and texture! Thanks for encouraging us to try new foods. We know it can take 20xs to help our taste buds learn to like a new food and even then the taste buds themselves are new every few weeks so what we were not too fond of last week may turn out to be our FAV FOOD when we try it again this week!!!

It's so fun to DO things while we learn in Kindergarten! So on Friday, the plants Book Buddy day, we first celebrated Mr. Hommes' Birthday! and then we actually planted seeds in real dirt! All week long we have been reading and watching movies and talking and making paper flowers and plants and finally we get to dig in and really learn about them! We are trying super hard to stay at a zero or one voice (whisper) while we are working at our stations for math and reading. It makes a difference in our ability to concentrate and stay focused and it is a challenge as well! Good thing we have tons and tons of movement time built into our day to balance out our minds and bodies! YEAH warm weather has begun?!?! WE HOPE the days of snow pants in Kindergarten are a thing of the PAST! Well we can hope:) Oh we had a visit from Mr. Peterson's cousin Surfer Dude, he brought us Root Beer Floats for all of our hard work lately, wow thanks!!!

We had the most wonderful visit from Critters and Company on Monday. Our presenter, Mr. Olson shared with us how about teasing. We need to remember that if the person we are teasing does not like the teasing then it is our responsibility to listen to them when they tell us with words or with their body, "Please stop I do not like what you are doing" Mr. Olson shared several animal stories with us. The stories helped us understand how important it is to be respectful and if we do make a mistake, "Sorry is good, but change is BETTER"

Nice to get back to a full week of learning! Snow days put a cramp in our style:) We have been practicing nonsense words and started working on subtraction. There is so little time left in our first year of school! So much fun still to be had! We are getting better and better at trying to use our reading strategies to figure out new words BEFORE we ask for help. Yea! We have also started a new morning routine that inspires us to get to class early to begin our work, now that is amazing, just sayin:) Please keep helping us practice our new sight words and read, read together as much as you are able at home. Thank you to everyone who could make it in for conferences, we appreciate the support:) Watch for info as it comes out for our trip to the Little Falls Zoo in May as well as other end of the year events.

We couldn't get enough of Dr. Seuss this week! Dress up days, special hot chocolate treats, reading in a super cool decorated Library and then of course fun activities in our classroom:) AND THEN to top if off, we mixed ourselves up with the other 75 Kindergarteners and went to the different classrooms!!!!!! We each had the different Kindergarten teachers teach us!!!! If that wasn't enough we learned about the letter Dd, talked about adding, learned about a word you have to write when someone is talking, (said of course) WAIT THERE'S MORE!!! We had the X Games Gold Medal winner bring his BMX bike show up some amazing tricks while he shared with us how to be a Superman to our friends by speaking up if there are bullies picking on someone. We learned that words hurt and leave a mark, we learned to do our best in school so we can have the choice to be whatever we want to be when we are older. Thanks Matt Wilhelm you are an inspiration!

100th day and Kindness Celebrations
This week has been so much learning, in so many different ways! We really spent some quality time with the number 100. We counted, wrote, ate, stamped, built, linked with chains and created a super cool "something" with the numerals 1, 0, and 0. Then for two days we remembered what it means to be patient and kind, counted and stacked with hearts, graphed with hearts, painted and filled candy boxes with chocolate and cherry smelling play dough. Some of us even asked mom to braid our hair in a heart! Oh my GOODNESS! We wrote some super sweet stories about what Love is.... We will share our class book at conferences. Hope everyone can spend some extra hug time over the long weekend AND REALLY HOPE we all have time to get healthy, whew our sick tummies and throats could use some relief:)

Theme Animals Week 1
We LOVE Book Buddy days! Our theme this week was animals so boy did we learn about animals. We played with a farmer puppet and his farm tools and products and livestock, we categorized farm animals, we completed puzzles and decorated some adorable masks, we drew a habitat and then ate our farm animal crackers AND we read a great wacky story about animals. Remember parents, the books your children bring home from this day are FREE to your child each month!
Along with Book Buddy day we have been playing animal charades, boy can we act out some creative animal actions! Please help us to practice "inferring" what a story is about. What details in the story help us learn more about what the writer is trying to tell us, by NOT ACTUALLY WRITING those details with his or her words!

This is the final week of our food unit and to culminate our learning we invited Mrs. Sundholm's aunts and mom to come in and share what it was like to live and visit Japan! We learned about Girl's Day and Boy's Day. We learned that the grade levels of students at schools in Japan take turns cleaning the school, no custodians! Wow are we thankful for our custodians! We also watched Linda mix up fried rice and then we all were able to try to use chopsticks and try the delicious food ! YUMMM
We celebrated our good behavior this quarter by having a popcorn party while we watched parts of Mulan to learn about working together and helping our friends and not hurting them.
Oh and we made delightful "Horrible Harry's" to help us remember the Hh sound, school is SO FUN!

Vice President: Natalie
Thanks to everyone for putting "Pp" items in the pockets your children brought home! We used them to really, REALLY practice our Pp letter and sound! Check out our videos below:) We also made and ate Pancakes this week. (We really like to put our all into our learning!) We started our Kiwi pack books last week. Thank you for all of the practice and tallying the books you have read. Remember to use the books as a PART of the evening reading together and not to overdo the experience. The books are meant to be "easier", at a child's independent level and we don't want them to develop bad habits by reading to quickly or goodness sakes memorizing the story and not even trying to use some our special reader skills. Check out the letter that went home tonight regarding the special events coming up next week. Practice making any kind of pattern and recognizing teen numbers, we are working on both of those fun skills!

This week was so "fast". We are learning about Transportation and Cause and Effect. So what happens when we drive our cars too fast on the mat? We crash! What happens when we push our friends on the playground? We feel bad because they get hurt. Our favorite transportation has been airplanes, but we are learning about scooters and taxis as well. We played follow the leader with our I will follow you song, because it's Ff week and because we play follow the leader most every week in our classroom. Have a great weekend everybody!

Short, learning packed week! With only three days to learn a new letter, Nn and two new words, go/up and then those tricky teen numbers (especially 11 and 12) we really really worked hard! Vice President Natalie
We had a short week. I know ahhhhhh rats:( Thank you to all who are able to attend conferences! Looking forward, remember to check our IXL, SeeSaw class sights and don't forget to go online to the parent portal to find your report card. We are so proud of all of the progress that we have made together as a class, being friends and following our class routines AND we are thrilled with each of us individually, remembering to always do quality work, listen carefully the first time and trying our best to solve our problems independently before we ask for help from an adult.

Letter: Aa Sight Word: to
Vice President Jaelyn
This has been an AWESOME WEEK! We have had special learning days on Monday AND on Friday!!! Monday we started our Aa apple week by having Leah's mom help us cut and core apples to make our very own applesauce! We loved it warm on Monday and then tried it cold on Tuesday! Yummers every bite! Who knew there was a machine that could cut, core and peel an apple all at once! We learned about the parts of apples, where and how they grow, and tons of fun songs. Friday Natalie's mom and our wonderful Book Buddies helped us learn about Pumpkins! We cut open a class pumpkin and; what??? no slimy pulp, seeds and flesh??? How did "treasure" get into our pumpkin???!!! We counted, read about, tasted, tallied, drew, weighed, measured, laced cards, worked puzzles and in general did everything but actually GROW our own pumpkin:)

Letters: "Ii-Rr" sight word: the
Vice President Jaxson
So this week we started using our Work Chart to move from station to station....and that is Hard! But Hard is not a problem for us, we "read" our names and found the picture for the work we were to do and BAM learning began:) Hope you all enjoyed sticking "the" all over your house;) We have also been really working on writing letters and numbers using the top, dotted middle and bottom lines as our guides. Please help us remember the rules for where letters start and stop, basement letters and tall/short letters. Our nursery rhyme unit is over, we are great at saying a ton of them, ask us!

Quotable quotes: Cole "Mrs. Sundholm, you should eat school lunch, you don't know what you are missing!"
The second full week of school continues to be the best ever!! We are learning all about how to move through our classroom and be helpful learners to each other. Walking one direction on our "classroom road" is important, we don't want to have any "crashes!" We have also been learning Nursery Rhymes, watch Sawyer below, he has Little Miss Muffet down! We are getting our shapes in our heads like circle, square, triangle and rectangle, oh and then those tricky shapes trapezoid and hexagon, ask us what our special song is to help us remember.
Sawyer! Way to share Little Miss Muffett!!

Kinder Camp was AWESOME!!! Thanks so much to those of you that could bring your new Kindergartener!! We had so much fun getting familiar with each other, our school, our classroom, the LUNCHROOM and the PLAYGROUND!!! Just an FYI, if you brought your supplies in, grand and if you didn't, no worries, you can bring them with you during Entrance Conferences. Please remember we only allow the vinyl rest mats. Yoga or cloth mats are too challenging to put into our cubbies by ourselves and avoiding lice transmission works best with vinyl mats.
You will get a TON of info at Entrance Conferences, please try to look through all of it, some is to be kept as reference throughout the year and some is timely for the near future. We will have a book order about once a month. Our class earns point toward free books with every student order. Yeah!!! FREE BOOKS! Please try to practice your child's lunch number in the coming weeks. Please try to set aside a time everyday to look into the magic school bag your child brings home, treasures abound in that special bag, your child is so eager to share his/her learning with you:) Please feel welcomed to connect with me through email and volunteers are ENCOURAGED! Our morning literacy block is a great time to help out, about 8:30-11:00.
Bus/after school changes.......are very worrisome to me. If you wait till the last minute and leave a voice mail or email there could be challenges with me getting the information, technology does NOT always work. PLEASE try to send an actual DATED NOTE before the day of the change or in your child's bag the day of the change. I cannot send your child to a different destination simply on their say so. I'm sure you understand the confusion we face as a teary little face insists he or she is going on a different bus to grandma's and then we find out later that the date is NEXT Friday. Above all else my desire is to keep your child safe and protected at all times. We check all backpacks each day for the first few weeks, until the kids get in the habit of responsibly checking themselves.
See you Tuesday or Wednesday! Much love,
Mrs. Sundholm
Check out our Kinder Camp pics!!! Much fun had by all:) Sorry Jaxson, I think your back was turned for the photo opp, will get your smiley face next week:)

May 15-19, 2017 Letter of the Week: Xx Word of the Week: with The letter Xx is crazy! Pretty hard for a Kindergartener to learn about words that start with the letter/sound when there are basically NO WORDS that start with the letter Xx and it's sound! Huh? No matter, we can adapt:) We painted white crayon on pictures of dinosaur and kid bones and then we painted over them with black water color, whala! X-rays! We also studied dinosaurs by talking about plant and meat eaters, made stegosaurus crowns and worked on some pretty complicated dino puzzles, gotta watch those curvy and straight lines:/ So soon our Kindergarten time will come to an end. We look forward to our last days together!
May 8-12, 2017 Letter of the Week: Zz Word of the Week: where
So, this week we worked on the wonderful letter Zz. We painted these huge Zebras and hung them on the wall outside out classroom! We went to the ZOO and saw so many fun animals and learned so many fun facts about their habitats and food sources. Then we played on some rockin playground equipment! There are so many things to learn about outside of our classroom!

We are counting down till the end of Kindergarten:( Good and sad. This week we found a bunch of pictures of "Vicki" (our teacher's first name) who knew someone we know so well could look so........ummmmm DIFFERENT over the past 20 years! hahahaha We had a great time learning and writing about BUGS. We aew getting so good at writing small Rubber Band Books, you should check our backpacks cause there should be several in ther from the last few days! We are really working on what are the key words to listen for when deciding if a math story problem is addition or subtraction. Watch for info about our trip to the Zoo NEXT Friday May 12th. Please bring a lunch and maybe a jacket and water is the best choice when bringing a beverage for our lunch.

Kindergarten 16/17 is in the final month!!!
We will be wrapping up our KIWI pack guided reading sessions and starting our end of the year evaluations! It is so exciting this time of year to see how very, very much progress all of us have made! We will be working on comparing and contrasting and recognizing text importance in our literacy stations and in math we will really try to master story problems, BOTH adding and subtracting. (sometimes it's hard to know which is which!) Book Buddy day is always a hit and our games/activities were centered around the them of Amazing Animals. BUGS, SEA CREATURES and lastly DINOSAURS!
We also tried some yummy brussels sprouts, most of us didn't thumbs up them, but we ALL tried them and that's a great start!!

We are wrapping up our plant them next week so be watching for a dandy seedling heading home:) We also worked on a STEM project together. We needed to engineer a roof that would be waterproof and then check our success by raining on our creation! Mostly successful, and a lot wet, tons of fun. Check out our videos below!

April 10-11, 2017 Letter of the Week: Easter stuff Word of the Week: Easter Stuff
This was a special three days filled with Easter themed activities to build on our literacy, math, cooperation, and motor skills. We hunted for eggs with Easter themed words, hunted for eggs with subtraction and addition sentences, we guessed how many jelly beans in an egg and wrote stories about bunnies. We worked with puzzles and games, built with blocks and sponge painted eggs, followed group directions to decorate eggs, read a TON of Easter books and talked about character, sequencing and illustrations with each. We played Bunny Ball where we tossed eggs in a basket and kept track of our score by skip counting by 2's. Whew, who knew Easter could hold so much learning! Hope you all enjoy your families over the holiday break. We have basically about six weeks left of Kindergarten{: just sayin.......

The Kindergarteners in room #118 are so, so thankful to Ms Nancy! We were all able to go to her farm on Friday and learn tons and tons about how to make maple syrup in the "sugar bush." We had so much fun seeing the cows and their baby Arthur. Mrs. Sundholm even was able to feed him! We learned that the baby needs to learn to eat grain by licking the bottle after the milk is finished. Ms Nancy gets to feed Arthur his bottle 2x a day. We played games with a trampoline and visited with Farmer Byron about what he does to make maple syrup at his farm. Joshua showed us the trees in the woods and how they get tapped. There was so much to learn and experience and see and hear and taste. Everybody even remembers boots so no shoes were wrecked! We also learned about the letter Jj and practiced the words have and him. We are so good at our 3D shapes, Mrs. Sundholm says we have learned them super, duper fast! If you go outside, ask us to tell you the parts of a plant. We have that DOWN!

Letter "Ll" the sight word "come"
Vice President Tenley
This week ended with one of our favorite Kindergarten activities, BOOK BUDDY DAY! The theme this time was weather and plants and so of course we ate "dirt and drank dirty water" Thanks, thanks, thanks to our wonderful volunteers! Sadly, we only have two special days left this year. We also made lemonade because it starts with the letter Ll. Lots of muscle power needed to squeeze that juice! Check out the video below, we collected money for Bowls to Bellies. Our Principal and the Dean of Students were duct taped to poles in the gym!

We have spent a lot of time this week comparing and contrasting the movie Lion King and the play Lion King Jr. What were the characters like, what was the music like, what did the costumes and sets look like, how much drama did the actors use, were the characters real or not. Then we also spent a lot of time talking about how to show our best manners and be a respectful part of a large group at a large place. We are masters at helping each other and keeping an eagle eye out for our teachers and friends so we do not get lost when we are out and about. We had a delicious "breakfast" lunch during Farm to School day and said Happy Birthday to our great cook Wanda! Thanks for helping us work on our letter Ww and the words for and of. If you want us to predict the weather for we, we are about as good as the weather people:)

Waitin for the "magic to begin"
March 13-17, 2017
Many mischievous moments this week as the leprechauns ran a-muck in our classroom:) We practiced number sentences with shamrocks and graphed the classroom St. Patrick's Day objects. The last session of ASK began on Monday, games is the theme so lots of fun competition happening! The weather is a challenge lately, please check to see what might be needed on the playground, it may not be super cold but the wind may come up and/or the mud could be wet and wonderful. For both of those conditions snow pants would still be a great choice. The letters Gg and Dd have been on our minds along with the words get, said, did and you. Remember, we will be going to the Lion King Jr. in Duluth this coming Wednesday and won't be back until AFTER school at 4:00 p.m. please remember to plan to pick your child up later than usual that day. We are working on the new theme of Weather for another week yet. Have fun writing sentences about the weather and what you can do and see in different kinds of weather.
Dr. Seuss week had us all crazy like a cat in the hat!! We had so much fun dressing up! Then, on Friday our Kindergarten classes all divided up into four different groups and we went to each other's classrooms for special Dr. Seuss day activities! We made Oobleck, we make Lorax hats, we played Cat in the Hat games and songs and we sorted goldfish crackers for the book One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish! We all practiced wonderful manners and had so much fun with ALL of the Kindergarten friends! We are going to try to finish the year with a BANG and read, read, read those KIWI packs! Please remember to help us by sitting near us while we read and helping us to mark down the tallies in our Razzle Dazzle reader form. Practice is so helpful! We have been working on the letter Ee and the word are. Please challenge us with some subtraction stories and see if we can figure out how many things are left when you "take away" something from a group. The end of the 3rd quarter is coming up in 3 weeks. It may seem like a long time but that means that shortly there will only be one more quarter of Kindergarten left!!!!! AHHHHHH! We are so excited to keep learning and so excited to start thinking about FIRST GRADE!!! Check out all of our pics below, some are of our Dr. Seuss days, some are the wonderful Vice President of the day, some are just great action shots of learning!

Quote of the Week Ronan "I'm cooking, do you want to know what is special about my food? I'm putting love in for my special ingredient!"
That about sums up what our class is all about! We are so helpful and careful with our friends. We play tag together on the playground and include everybody! No one gets left out and we all play with such great attitudes, no pouting or whining if we get tagged or don't get tagged! (and that is no small accomplishment in Kindergarten so YEAH for us!!?
We worked on those troublesome Rr's.....not the easiest letter but we practiced and practiced. The words of the week were "will and play" Lots of sentences beginning with "I will play....." We are talking about making inferences and summarizing what we read. Yep you read that right, whew who knew Kindergarteners could think such big thinks:) We changed the first letter of a word to make a new word and if all that wasn't enough we had our Book Buddies in on Friday to learn about the Presidents and our flag. We NEVER let a flag touch the ground, we are way too respectful for that!
Check out our pics below from Book Buddy day and Farm to School Lunch day and a special presentation from Dixie, the specially trained leader dog for Bunny, a sweet lady who shared what it is like to be blind. Thank you to the local Lions service group for bringing Dixie and Bunny to school!

This has been a fun week for our writing lessons. We read the story Sneezy the Snowman and boy did we get some great ideas for what a snowman should NOT do! We got so carried away we even made a class book about it. The letter Bb went well with our words for the week, he and she, they all rhyme so we had a great time, eating a lime, during story time:) Well we never did eat a lime but it does rhyme!! We still are working on cause and effect, if you practice counting backwards you will get better!

We also practiced cause and effect like; say I get a shot, I say; OUCH!!! No biggie we have it DOWN. Please spend some time counting backwards.....great way to challenge us to get into bed or get our teeth brushed or ???

Thank you to all who able to come in to visit for conferences! Please connect with me so we can set up another time if you were unable to make it. We have spent this week working on the sound/letter Cc and the word his. We wrote the best stories about our Principal, Mr. Peterson!!! Check out the slideshow below, we were awesome! We have started to add some numbers together. You could ask us to see how many of different combinations there are at our house. Maybe keep the numbers below twenty for now:) Even though we have had a bit of warm weather, please remember the snow pants and warm, DRY hats and mittens. We need reminders to take our wet clothes out of our backpacks so they can dry overnight, wet mittens are NOT cozy:(

So we start anew! The letter Pp was celebrated with Putting Pp objects in our Pockets and then sharing them with our friends. What a fun way to practice the first letter sound! Remember, we are practicing the ENDING letter sounds now as well, a bit rougher but a needed skill to become a great reader! We also added the word "the" to our high frequency words, please help us learn all of these by saying them fast, without trying to s t r e t ch them out to hear each sound, just POP them out:) We are learning about measurment words and how they are used in our math lessons. We are writing descriptive words in writing and still keeping that editing song in our heads. (this week, almost ALL of us forgot to put an ending on our sentences! WHAT?!) As we read in our small groups our teacher is sharing the way to make connections and inferences with the stories we are reading..."all the better to become a good reader!"

These last four days before Christmas break has us all busy practicing how to leave spaces between our words and add punctuation at the ends of our Christmas stories about reindeer. We are making crazy complicated Christmas patterns in math and counting backwards with so much excitiment to see how many more days until Christmas. We tell stories about our family celebrations, being sure to sequence everything in the right order. (so we don't open presents before we actually get to Grandma and Grandpa's house.) Check out our pics below from Grandfriend Day at Aitkin Manor. Our friend, Irma, was so excited to get her cat blanket and cat/chicken figurines. Thank you to all who donated spare change! Any extra change will be given to the Ronald MacDonald house in the Twin Cities.

Sooooo, Christmas season has begun in Kindergarten! We started off performing our holiday songs Thursday night and what a show we put on! Thank you to all who helped support our show, we really enjoyed every minute. In school we are working on the letter Ii and words it, is, in. When we read we talk about story elements like character, setting, problems and solutions. We also summarize (use our own words) and synthesize (use our own experiences) to talk about and learn from a story. In math we are creating patterns, counting backwards and still working on those tricky teens! We will be starting "Kindergarteners Care" next week. We adopt a resident at Aitkin Health Services. Please send in any spare change and we will use it to purchase a small gift. We will walk up to the residence and share the gift, some crafts and the gift of songs and hugs on Tuesday Dec. 20th.

Short Week but no shortage of stuff to learn! We started our progression of about one letter/sight word a week. This week we learned about the letter Mm, how to write it, say it and put it into words. We learned about finding the letter at the beginning of a word, thinking about it's sound and lastly looking at the picture clue to see if we can "read" the word. WOW! We are learning how to read!!! We have added the word /to/ to the list of words we have practiced. Please help your child practice recognizing the words and then also writing his/her name with the First letter Capitalized:) We could also use some practice counting to 20, we are just starting to really work on our "Tricky Teens." Enjoy the extra time at home together as a family! See you on Monday!

This week we have practiced the word my and met some very important people in our community. Please ask us to share what Fireman Joe and Smokey the Bear said about getting out and staying out of a building if there is fire. We learned to trust firefighters and ask them for help. We learned how important it is to not be afraid of all of their gear and the sounds they make when they breath into the special mask that helps them be safe in a fire. We learned to have a safe place to meet at our homes should there be a fire and to leave everything and let the firefighters take care of our stuff.

Busy week once again in Kindergarten! We learned the new words we and me to add to the list we have already mastered: the, a and I. Please look for these words in books and around our community so we can practice seeing and reading them in a variety of places. We can read and write the numbers to 10 and are starting to work on the "tricky teens". We have now practiced the shapes square, circle, rectangle and triangle, again see if you can find them as you are in stores and about town, maybe even recognize a shape in a tree, cloud or building?! We had the BEST visitors at lunch! Our own Aitkin Gobbler football players came to Rippleside to have lunch with us and share what their favorite books are. We are looking forward to another visit where we might be able to actually have them read to us! Reading and sports, manners and might all go together to make for literate ladies and gentlemen:) Lastly, check out the link above to use a fun math site where your child can practice math and move up to more challenging skills at their own pace. If you have trouble logging in, check the paper that was sent home Friday or you can just contact me.

All week long we have been learning about letters, sounds, numbers, words, how to wait our turn and not BLURT out, sharing, helping our friends, looking at books.....it just goes on and on:) In addition to all of our regular FUN there were a couple special events this week. First of all we had our first Farm to School lunch, which was DEEElicccous! Next we had our first Book Buddy day. The theme this month was apples, next month pumpkins. What a great way to learn with community volunteers and experience apples by painting, eating, counting, reading, graphing, writing words.....AND we each received a FREE apple book! Free books! It just doesn't get much better!

All of the little schedules and routines that we need to follow to be safe seem to be coming together. Thank you for writing a note if your child needs to be gone from school. Please feel free to connect with me if you are interested in helping out/volunteering in our classroom. I will be contacting families this weekend, using the list I have from entrance conferences.
Quote of the Week:

We did it! An entire, fun, creative, EXHAUSTING week of learning and imagining. I don't know about you, but we are; done in! So much to remember; line? what's a line and why do I have to stay in it? Walk, really, how do I ever get anywhere? HA HA. We have helped each other and waited for each other and had FUN learning about letters, shapes, bus safety, lunch trays, specialist teachers (ART, LIBRARY, MUSIC, PHY ED, SCIENCE) Ask us what we have learned for the day and we should be able to share the three things that our teacher put on the Learning List. The Vice President gets to take it home each day, but we all contribute to it in the hopes that we all can share something from our day when we get home to our families.
Quote of the Week
Fabian "I like snowmen, hmmm I wonder how you spell them?"
Ronan while we were singing the days of the week, as we passed by Tuesday.. a loud, resounding "TACO TUESDAY YEAH!!"

So all this week we have been learning about.....INSECTS! We can tell you that an insect has three body parts and six legs.....spiders are not insects, ask us what they are called! We are working ALOT on subtraction stories up to ten and the 3 D shapes from our song. Scroll back and you will see some friends practicing our 3 d shapes song. Lots of fun things are happening during the last month of school. Watch our newsletter and this site for updates! April 18-22, 2016 WE ARE ON TV! Check out this link to see our class, along with the other Kindergarten classes featured on a wonderful video about healthy food choices! And just like that it is SPRING! We are so, so glad to be wearing light jackets and NO BOOTS! Please remember that we do go outside everyday and sometimes that light jacket feels great if the wind comes up or the sun goes under a cloud. We have had a super week meeting our new student, Tyson! He has moved to our town from Onamia so we have had a chance to learn a bit about directions and sizes of different communities. Tyson is learning the letter Ww, the word was and all about Plants with us this week. We are also reviewing 3D shapes and really practicing subtraction. April 4-8, 2016 We went to Miss Nancy's farm to watch how to make maple syrup! We were able to have a photo op on hay bales, see and hear and smell cows and horses and chickens and dogs! Walk through the MUD to see tapped maple trees (sugar bushes) AND THEN! to top it off, Miss Nancy gave us syrup and we had pancakes with fresh maple syrup for snack! Practice "garden plants" all weekend:) Everybody remembered today's which was "concentrate" We finished up the letter Uu today. School lunch was another big hit....pulled pork sandwiches, too YUMMY. March 21-23, 2016
We had fun doing lots of learning activities with plastic easter eggs this week! Ask your child what he/she can remember? We estimated/and then checked our estimate of jelly beans in eggs. "Cracked" the eggs to find scrambled up letter tiles and then wrote the word. "Cracked" eggs to find CVC words and matched/colored/traced the word. We also attended a Reader's Theature play in 2nd grade. Mrs. Host had a wonderful group of kids that performed so professionally. They were loud, expressive speakers, managed their bodies. We were a terrific audience by listening with a zero voice, watched the performers with our eyes and asked well thought out questions after the plays were finished. We even wrote a thank you together as a class and delivered it after school. Quote of the Week Langen as he was struggling to untie a BUNCH of knots that had worked their way into his tennis shoe laces. "Ahh, the leprechaun probably did it, he drives me NUTS!" March 14-18, 2016
Did you know that leprechauns can be very mischievous? Well we sure found that out as our room was turned topsy turvy this week:) The word little was our high frequency focus so lots of tiny teeny talk. Our letter was Kk so polite kicking only, allowed. Next week will be all about Easter and eggs, can't wait! Quote of the Week (on St. Patrick's Day) Raylee: "AHHHHHH, the water in my bathroom toilet was GREEN this morning!!!" March 7-10, 2016

Our math focus is subtraction; try taking stuff away from us and see if we can write a number sentence to go with that! We are learning the letter Ll and even though it's sort of easy with just straight lines, we are really working on QUALITY Lls. Our writing is getting so detailed! Ask us to write a couple sentences on any topic (weather has been our theme this week) and we can show you how creative we can be with quality writing skills! Quotes of the Week Carter " I already have the answer, I have a math machine in my head" Raylee when asked to count to 100, "Ah I don't have time!" February 29-March 4, 2016

February 22-26, 2016
Our Theme has been Neighborhoods and what jobs people do in them. We have been writing stories about what people "do" and also asking what "this" is, so we can use our high frequency words. We have also been learning new vocab words like, community, workers, admire, deliver, schedule. Ask us what they mean and how they can talk about neighbors with these words. Thank you to all who were able to attend conferences! If you need to reschedule, please call me to set up a time, I would love to visit!. Enjoy your families over the weekend. Raylee said, "You must be getting bigger!" Carter while we were painting our hands red to make a bird...."I have NO PROBLEMS getting my hands dirty!" Thanks for all the sweet, yummy valentines sent in last week! We had fun playing a few games and opening our cards on Friday. We wrapped up our unit on Animals and are really working hard on ending and middle sounds. In math we could use some help randomly saying numbers that are one more or one less than any number 1-100. (Try to pick tough ones to stump us:) Looking forward to the first night of conferences this Thursday! February 1-5, 2016
Quote of the Week Raylee was asking Mrs. Cline what bus she rides home at night. Mrs. Cline said she rides the "Cline Family Suburban" Raylee asked, "What animal is on that bus?" We are working on the letter Hh this week. Ask your kids to tell you the story of Harry and how he hung his clothes out on the line...... A great way to remember how to make the letter Hh and remember it's sound:) We have been doing Charades during one of our learning station, the kids love to both be the guesser and the "animal" We are getting so good at taking turns and using our guessing skills to figure out the animal. We should all be able to count backwards from 20, start to ID the 3-D shapes and skip count by 5's to 100. Have fun practicing! January 18-22, 2016
We are ALL about FOOD!!! Yummy subject if there ever was one! We DEVOURED a FEAST of Fried Rice! ( these are just two of our vocab words for the Theme Food) Mrs. Sundholm's mom, and two aunts came in to school and wore Kimonos while they made us Fried Rice! Ask us what INGREDIENTS were in our rice. Did you know Japanese people sometimes wear Kimonos for PJs? We learned to say thank you, "Arigato" which means thank you in Japanese. We have been working on the words have, is and play plus the letters Cc, Oo and Nn. All of our report card testing is finished! We can hardly wait to have our parents visit with Mrs. Sundholm during conferences! We had a super RALLY with Surfer Dude today! Click here to see/hear the song that helps us remember. (beware....it's REALLY catchy!!) Brandon is practicing CONE!January 4-8, 2016
We have had several children "Catch the Wave" lately! So many respectful attitudes and helpful friends. I am very proud of room 118 Kindergarten! As we begin our new year, 2016, we are learning about Healthy Food and how to make good choices. The letter Nn and word "have" were our focus in Lang. Arts and counting backwards from 20, along with beginning to work on our 3-D shapes are at the top of our list in Math. Please consider enrolling your child in the afterschool ASK program, lots of fun practice on skills and relationships. December 14-22, 2015

Thank you for helping us remember that helping and serving others is a special blessing/gift at this time of year. Thank you for modeling respectful quite audience behavior as the kids sang last week. Quotes of the Week As we were talking about how fun Christmas is one child said he wished it could be Christmas everyday, Asa was quick to respond with, "But then we would miss our birthdays!" and lots of other kids chimed in with missing other special days. I guess it's okay to have a day at a time for special events:) A child from Mrs. Ostrowski's class saw a no parking sign (a P with a line through it) as we were walking to Aitkin Health Care to sing for our Kindergarten Cares resident, "Hey! why can't we say any "p" words in this building!" Quote of the Week
We were talking about what pumpkin's ARE for our class data chart, Cassondra said: "Pumpkins are a slide for ants!"
We were learning about Symmetry and asking what the new word was.....Alyssa said: "I know! A Cemetery!"
Friends unit is going strong. Sometimes it is easier to say what a friend is and how a friend should act, than it is to actually be and do the friendly thing:) We are using the words like honest, pleasant, grateful, assist as we learn what we can do to be a good friend. We are working and playing together with our friends in our Housekeeping/dress up corner everyday. We learn to ask please and thank you and that our friends don't have to like the same food we like, they can say no thank you:)
We talked about respect for our flag and for Veterans. Did you know our very own football field was dedicated Veteran's Field in honor of our local Veterans! Click here to see a video of our guest veterans parade.
Thank you in advance to all families as we meet together for conferences!

We are showing our teacher how much we know about the beginning letter sounds, rhyming, making sentences, counting, sharing with and helping our friends, PLUS remembering what it means to be a part of a family. |
October 19-23, 2015
Quote of the Week:
Brandon "Mrs. Sundholm! I'm here for my hug!"
Kaydence to Mrs. Howe our para, " I like your hair Mrs. Howe, it has that dirty blonde look."
Almost done with October, we are starting to think about our very first report card and what we have been learning so far! In about a month our parents will come in to visit and see what letter names and sounds we have learned, we are hopeful that we know almost all by now, cause we will be putting those letters together to make words and sentences as we learn to READ! We have been learning how to write the letters Mm and Aa and what their sounds are so we can write words that begin with their sound. We have learned about what makes a Family and how to be a helpful member of a family. The high frequency words we are learning to read (just by looking at them) are the, am, me, we, I, and can. One part of a story we are learning about is the setting. See some of us drawing settings below, we are careful to let everyone take a turn and share the markers and time to tell about the story.'

At the end of the week we started our Families unit with the new word we and the letter Mm. Please help us practice starting our letters at the TOP and using ending marks in our sentences. Look around the house, any Mm words? Say em, write em!

Quote of the Week
Bo: "Don't I look so handsome today, Mrs. Sundholm?" and, "I don't do much applesauce."
Farm to School lunch day was delicious! Click here to see pics of us! We learned about our local farmers and ate a wonderful LOCAL meal, those apples were so crunchy and sweet! We were outside in some damp weather, watching our Farmer Principal Peterson drive a tractor! He was very safe:) This week we have been really trying to remember to listen and follow directions the FIRST time:) We are trying and practicing and making progress! We are making sure we start at the TOP to write most of our letters and numbers and that all sentences start with a capital letter, have finger spaces between the words and ending marks. When we need help, we raise our hands and wait for our teacher to come to us, that way we keep our friends safe and everyone gets the help he or she needs.

(After we left the lunchroom, JUST as we were next in line to get our food, for; a FIRE DRILL!!)
Jayda: This fire alarm is a RIP OFF! We JUST got in line for our lunch! :)
2nd Week of Kindergarten and we are learning all about being FLEXIBLE and going with the flow; imagine a fire alarm during Kindergarten lunch time! All of the kids were super respectful and calm, no problems and all was well! We have begun to learn about the first letter of a word and how important it is to learning to read; check the picture clue and the first letter of the word..... All of us are practicing our first letter name and sound recognition. The ABC Books your children brought home are yours to keep! Practice holding it with your helping hand (everyone is right handed this year, go figure, so helping hand is your left hand) then slide your right pointer finger under the words as you "read" ASK starts on Monday. If you are not sure about whether or not your child would be interested, check the flyer that has gone home the last few day, or ask for another. ASK meets after school, until 4:30 Mondays and Tuesdays. We participate in a variety of lessons, manners, games, Reader's Theature; the topics change each session. Fun and educational!
We have started to send home the "Learning List" with each Vice President. Please ask your child to share what was on the "Learning List" even if he/or she was not the VP for the day. Talking, at home, about what we learned during the day is an excellent way to cement those skills into your Kindergartener's mind, also so fun to hear their take on the day.
A quick review of Vice-President in Room #118..... each child will have a turn to wear the VP badge and then have the privilege (being first in line, being the weather helper among other tasks) and responsibilities (passing out milk, helping friends to get to the nurse) that go along with VP. I follow the classroom alphabetical order of names so your child will get a turn once every 20 days. Encourage your child to dress up and make this a special occasion! Please know, also, that the "bar" is set extra high this day, if the VP fails to demonstrate polite, respectful Catch the WAVE behavior he or she can be impeached....YIKES! We all try our very best on our special day to be a role model that our class can be proud of :)
Book orders were due this Friday. I will send a new order home each month and then they will be due mid-month.
We had a RALLY with the First and Second Graders! So fun to learn about helping others and speaking up when a friend is in need. Check out our pics here!

Max: " I am NOT going in THAT bathroom, ew!"
Mrs. Sundholm: "Why not Max?"
Max: "It has P I N K water!"
Mrs. Sundholm: "That's from our wonderful custodians cleaning our bathrooms last night, mom/dad clean your bathroom at home, right?"
Max: "NOPE" hahahahahaha
We had a marvelous, wonderful, spectacular first couple days of school!!! Big, huge thanks to all of the support staff here at school who calmed and directed our new kids to their new classes! Big, huge thanks to all of our families for loving us and sending us out on our way to learn and be with our friends!
A couple FYI's for everyone:
- Our monthly newsletter and our first quarter goal sheets are both on our class site, just look for the "buttons" when you click through to the Kindergarten page.
-Several families were wondering about the 3 small books that came home the first day of school....they are to KEEP, enjoy!
-Any work type papers that come home are NOT to be returned. They are for you to use as a conversation starter to "what did you do at school today?" You can talk about your child's day and have them show/share their work. Please empty your child's folder each night. Look for any notes from myself or Mr. Peterson or any other school related info so that you can be up to date with your child's school day. Return the folder....maybe with a paper that needed to be signed and returned, or with a bus note, but remove any daily work daily. The folders/backpacks very quickly become clogged with old papers.
-On Tuesday and Thursday, snacks are supplied by school, using the $45.00 you send in for the entire year. We had cucumbers with ranch dressing Thursday! On Monday, Wednesday and Friday you may send in a healthy snack for your child to have with his/her milk, we do have a small fridge for things that might spoil.
